Floating Bed

We were asked to design and craft a low-profile platform bed for a space where every centimeter needed to be considered. The piece needed to eliminate the requirement for additional bedroom furniture while creating an illusion of more space in compact surroundings.

CEEN designed this platform bed as a solution to both spatial and aesthetic challenges. The low-lying frame, constructed from solid oak, extends beyond the mattress dimensions to create a continuous plinth around the bed. This extension eliminates the need for traditional bedside tables while creating a practical surface for personal items, effectively reducing the room's furniture footprint.

The extended platform appears to float above the floor plane, lending a sense of lightness that counters the bed's substantial presence. This visual trick, combined with the elimination of separate bedside furniture, creates an illusion of space that makes the room feel larger and more open.

Each joint and connection was carefully considered and executed in our workshop, ensuring structural integrity while preserving the design's clean lines. The result is a piece that demonstrates how thoughtful design can solve spatial challenges while elevating the aesthetic of a room, proving that functional solutions can be both beautiful and space-enhancing.
